Veronica “Ronnie” Valenzano, 77, a longtime resident of the East Mountain section of Scranton left us Wednesday afternoon surrounded by family, at Regional Hospital of Scranton. She is the beloved wife of Vito A. Valenzano Jr. The couple was married October 28, 1969.
Born in Sydney, Australia she was the daughter of the late Marvin Hammond and Freda Myers LeBlanc. Ronnie and Vito met in Sydney at an officers ball while he was on R&R from with the Army during the Vietnam War. At the end of his R&R he returned to service and re-enlisted so that the couple could spend a few more days together. On the second visit to Australia he proposed and the couple was married at St. James Church. They returned to the U.S. where Vito finished his military service in New Jersey. It was difficult for Ronnie to leave her family in Australia, however Vito and Ronnie were fortunate to visit numerous times over their 54 years together. Ronnie was first and foremost a loving wife, mother and grandmother affectionately known as “Mimi”. She also worked as a dental assistant; enjoyed traveling, sightseeing and shopping.
Ronnie had a beautiful singing voice to compliment her equally beautiful thick red hair. She loved Broadway and passed her passion for musicals to her only granddaughter. It was Ronnie’s pleasure to prepare holiday feasts and Sunday dinners for her gathered family. Her winters were spent with Vito in their motorhome escaping the cold with good friends in Okeechobee Florida. Most of all Ronnie loved and was dedicated to her husband and her family.
Surviving in addition to her husband are two daughters Tracy-Lyn Casey and husband Patrick, Scranton, Karen Zemalkowski and husband Joseph, Scranton; a son Anthony Valenzano and wife Nicole, Jefferson Twp.; a brother William Hammond and nephew Bryce Hammond of Vincentia, Australia.; and seven grandchildren Madelyn, Shaughn, Aidan and Noah Casey, Evan Zemalkowski, Maxwell and Andrew Valenzano.
Ronnie’s family expresses their gratitude to Julie Bannon and Evelyn Beers for all of their love and support over the past year.
A viewing will be held Saturday from 2-5pm with a blessing service to follow at 5pm in the Corey Brian Strauch Funeral Home, 602 Birch Street Scranton, PA 18505.
In lieu of contributions in her name, Ronnie would request that you make a special dinner for the ones you love.
