*****Memorial Services have been set for Natalie Isaac Henkelman, of Lake Waynewood, PA, who passed away June 18, 2021 at home.

Memorial services will be held Saturday August 28, 2021 at 11am in Covenant Presbyterian Church, 550 Madison Ave, Scranton, PA 18510. Family will receive friends from 10 am until the time of services in the church. A reception will follow the services at the church.****

Natalie Henkelman died at her Lake Waynewood, PA home on Friday, June 18 surrounded by her family and devoted caregivers, at the age of 90. Natalie was the daughter of David Isaac, Taliesin, Wales and Ann Smith, Wilkes-Barre, PA. Her family home was located on Tilbury Terrace in West Nanticoke, PA. Her loving husband Bill died in 2012 after 60 years of marriage.

Natalie is survived by her three children, Robert, Lake Waynewood, James (Linda), Lake Waynewood, and Marjorie Minnich (Wallace), Mickleton, NJ. Her six grandchildren, Ben, Bryan, Amelia, Elise, Greg, Genevieve, and great-granddaughter Elina (mom Amelia) were a large part of her life.

Natalie graduated from Wyoming Seminary (1948) and from Bucknell University (1952) with degrees in music performance and history. There she met Bill, and together they resided in South Scranton. Natalie taught in the Moosic schools early in her professional life and later was a permanent sub in the Scranton, Western Wayne, and Wallenpaupack School Districts. She attended Merton College at Oxford University for professional enhancement, and in 1985 she received her Master’s in English from the University of Scranton.

Music was a central part of her life, as were her Welsh relatives who visited many times. Natalie was a Board member and docent of the Scranton Philharmonic, NEPA Philharmonic, Day Nursery, Everhart Museum, Century Club, Singer’s Guild, Chorale Society, Junior League, Jewish Community Center, Anthracite Museum, Philharmonic League of Scranton, and the Wayne County Library. Natalie was a very accomplished pianist with a beautiful alto voice and enjoyed singing with many choral groups and introducing and teaching music to her family. One of her most cherished experiences was singing for Beethoven’s 9th Symphony with the Philharmonic. Natalie and Bill established the NEPA Philharmonic Piano Competition, a biannual event for the region’s young pianists, and its endowment continues to benefit the program and Philharmonic.

“I have been involved with music all my life. I have a Welsh background and I am sure those genes are working overtime. Music truly satisfies and nurtures the soul.” She particularly enjoyed attending Gymanfa Ganus with her Welsh family in the USA and abroad, both singing and conducting. Natalie attended the National Eisteddfod in Wales.

Over 55 years, Natalie and Bill loved many Irish Setters who were family members. Nat was a member of the “Morning Glories,” a South Side group of wonderful lady quilters who met continually for over 30 years. The produced about 750 quilts, though it was more than quilting. As Nat said, “It was also therapy and trust.”

Natalie is remembered and dearly loved by her family and community. Arrangements are entrusted to Corey Brian Strauch Funeral Home in Scranton, and a memorial service will be scheduled in the future. Remembrances may be made to the NEPA Philharmonic, Lake Waynewood Association, or the charity of the donor’s choice.
