Joseph Thomas Nieroda Jr., 89, of Scranton, passed away Thursday evening at the Gino J. Merli Veterans Center, Scranton. He is the husband of the late Marianne R. Bugno Nieroda, who passed in June of 2017. The couple was married 60 years
Born in Scranton, son of the late Joseph and Leona Reina Nieroda, he was a graduate of Scranton central High School and the University of Scranton. He was a Sergeant in the United Stated Marine Corps. Joe was a career Newspaperman. He started at a small local paper in Honesdale then in Philadelphia and then return to Scranton to work at the Scranton Tribune and later the Scranton Times starting as a delivery driver and then as a print man finally working as a staff writer for over 20 years until his retirement. He was the deputy Commissioner of boxing in the State of Pennsylvania he also served as a judge and was an avid fan of the sport.
Surviving are a daughter Paula Giordano and husband Michael, Dunmore, two sons Joseph T. Nieroda III and wife Kelly, Newton, PA , Lawrence Nieroda, and wife Wei-anne, Jersey City, NJ; seven grandchildren, two great grand child and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by by a sister Maryann Mullen and a brother Anthony Nieroda.-
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 10:30 AM in St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish, Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Church, 1211 Prospect Ave, Scranton, PA 18505. Entombment with military honors to follow in St. Catherine's Cemetery, Covington Twp.
A visitation will be held Tuesday at 9:am until the time of Mass in the church.
